Taking a break!

Summer Vacation is upon us and in that spirit I'm going to take a few weeks off.  Nothing fancy, just have a lot of balls to juggle at the moment.  I'll be back July 9th, 2015 to feed the trade fix.  Thanks guys or gals!  Hope to see you back in July!

Indie Pull List - Week of June 24th, 2015

All right, big list this week, I'm going to try and dive right in because I've got a box of birthday comic books sitting beside that are begging to be put in order and the daylight is almost spent.

  !!!DISCLAIMER!!!

All of this information is suggested. Sometimes books get delayed, sometimes they get cancelled all together. Most of the time the trades will be available. Prices are also suggested and subject to change at the discretion of the shop owner or the publisher themselves.

And hey, if you like what I'm doing tell your friends!  Give me a link, name drop me, plus 1 the posts on Google+ - it all helps.  And if you REALLY like me, (doubtful), then follow me on Twitter @TiberiusTaylor or just click this LINK.  Also, I started a Facebook group for those of us who aren't in to Twitter.  Thanks to everyone who does read, it means a lot - here's a bonus im
age to get you all fired up!

Infinitum: Time Travel Noir

Taking equal parts Chinatown or Maltese Falcon and giving it a Back To The Future Spin is what I first though when I read the amazing phrase Time Travel Noir.  When I read the plot synopsis it sounded, more-or-less, like Minority Report with a Back To The Future Spin, which is less intriguing somehow.  Agent Nine works for The Paradox Bureau preventing crimes before they happen.  And, naturally, there's a conspiracy and a few cover ups within the Bureau that Nine has to investigate while staying out of his other selves way, (ya, you thought your day was tough).

Invincible Vol. 21

I've always wanted to read this series.  I enjoy the Walking Dead and this seems like it's equivalent in super hero form: a long-running series where character's grow and change. What I, and I'm sure a lot of other people, wonder about Kirkman is how he can keep two very long running series going.  Let alone all of the other material he does.  One day I'll buy the compendiums and start going through his logical and emotional take on super heroes.

Marvel Pull List - Week of June 24th, 2015

I know I only get a handful of regular readers but I'm going to ask you guys or gals a quick question: what makes you come back for the next one and what makes you not care if you miss one?  I'm just curious because I've had some posts that have a fairly good amount of views, nothing Earth shattering, but enough and then the very next post will get significantly less numbers, (I'm talking 50 views for one post, 7 for another).  Thanks in advance.  But that's enough of that - let's get down to the funny business at hand.

Hardcover Highlight was another fairly easy decision.  All New Captain America Vol. 1: Hydra Ascendant is a Premiere edition hardcover with two different covers - one by Alex Ross and one by Stuart Immonen.  Turns out the "All-New" in the title is literal.  It's not Steve Rogers.  It's Sam Wilson, (whoever that is...well, Captain America, I guess) in a story that will have him earn the right to wear the Red, White and Blue by making the greatest sacrifice of his life.  There's also a trade coming out this week featuring Mr. Wilson.  Build up the new guy enough and Chris Evans may have to worry about his place in the MCU.  Or maybe just get used to sharing Cap's screen time.  Actually, that'd be kind of cool.

        Stuart Immonen                                                                                              Alex Ross

Ant-Man/Giant-Man - Epic Collection Vol. 1: The Man In The Ant Hill

I initially thought Giant-Man was a different hero all together so I was surprised to find out it's Hank Pym using his powers to become the opposite size.  I'm also wondering if Marvel is going to include Hank Pym in the movie in some way or possibly in future movies and that's why they're releasing stuff that doesn't have Scott Lang in it.  Either way this is written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby who some of you may be familiar with.

Howard The Duck - The Complete Collection Vol. 1

I don't know why but I seem to have an affinity for Howard the Duck.  It's odd because I've never really read any of the perverted duck's comics.  I saw the movie when I was probably too young to see it and then had nostalgic remembrances of it until I watched it again when I was probably too old to be watching it and didn't really enjoy it.  And yet here we are. When I see anything Howard the Duck related I smile.  I don't know why.  But yeah, the title for this one is fairly self-explanatory and does most of my job for me.  I guess that's just another reason for me to like Howard the Duck.

SRP: $34.99
Contains:  Fear #19, Man-Thing (1st Series) #1, Howard the Duck (1st Series) #1-16 and ANNUAL #1, Marvel Treasury Edition #12, and material from Giant Size Man-Thing #4-5

DC Pull List - Week of June 17th, 2015

First off, trying to do this while watching the season finale for Game of Thrones isn't the greatest idea, my attention is, let's say, divided.  Very heavily divided.  All right, well, let's see what happens. My Hardcover Highlight is a default choice and also the one I probably would have made.  I've been really enjoying the New 52 Flash books I've read.  It isn't a huge departure from what came before like, say, the Superman books.  It keeps a lot of what had been going on since Barry Allen came back and keeps the overall feel of the old books.

Black Canary And Zatanna - Bloodspell

I thought about covering this when I saw the list but wasn't sure what I would say about it and then I randomly saw the cover pic while looking for the Flash cover so I took it as a sign and decided to throw it up.  I like Paul Dini's writing - it's fun but takes itself seriously which is an odd combination that just happens to work.  I can't seem to find the issues that are contained in this book so I'm wondering if it's a story written as a true Graphic Novel.  I can't find any info that clarifies whether it's a collected mini series or a standalone novel.  As for the story it seems Black Canary has gotten herself mixed up in some supernatural shenanigans and needs Zatanna's help to figure it all out.  Works for me.

Red Hood And The Outlaws Vol. 6: Lost And Found

This is another New 52 book where I've enjoyed what I've read.  I can't speak to this particular volume, which I think has different writers from what I read, but the action has been solid so far and the group dynamic fast paced and quipy, (side note: NOT a different writer, I was mistaken on that).  I was a little surprised at the objectification of Starfire, (there's some pretty racey panels), but it does make sense on a more human level that Jason and Roy would be distracted by an alien of her proportions.  They do make up for it by making her a believable character with real motivations and feelings so that's something.

Indie Pull List - Week of June 17th, 2015

The Indies are definitely the most difficult of the three columns.  There's more to choose from and there's less that I'm familiar with.  I do the column in a sort of "improv" style of writing.  Nothing I write is pre-planned or crafted, (which I'm sure is painfully obvious sometimes).  I start the new post and about two to sometimes four hours later it's all formatted and my witticisms have either fallen very flat or have maybe scaled a height or two.  Every time I see the Indie list there's a deer in the headlights moment of, "I have no idea what to say about ANY of this", (as opposed to Batman or Spider-Man where I can draw on a minor knowledge and a great love of the characters).

Dark Horse had a couple of books that were either pushed back or I had the wrong date.  The infamous, (well, mostly to me, which is referenced here), Return of the Gremlins is now listed for this week not last week.  I think the Usagi Yojimbo volume was pushed back, too.  In fact a lot of the Dark Horse list looks pretty similar to last weeks..... Didn't find anything about those particular books but Jeff Lemire's new series Black Hammer has been indefinitely postponed while artist Dave Ormston recovers from his cerebral hemorrhage.  Don't know what's up with the other delays but here's a teaser image for Black Hammer since I loves me some Lemire.

San Hannibal - The City Of Love And Fear

What caught me first about this was the publisher - Pop! Goes The Icon.  I'd never heard of them and the exclamation point after the Pop.  That's the same thing Funko does with their ridiculously popular Pop! Figures.  They don't or at least not that I could see.  They've been publishing books since 2009 and they're based out of Las Vegas.  As for the series itself it 's called a neo-noir and it's a mini-series, so no waiting for future volumes or tracking down back issues to find out who dunnit.  It's about a private detective investigating the disappearance of a photojournalist that leads him to uncover the city of San Hannibal's secrets.  Sounds fairly routine but it has some pretty great reviews; one name-dropping critic said it was like: "Andy Warhol shot an Elmore Leonard movie but he never finished it and Ridley Scott and David Lynch got together and wrapped it all up."  If it's even half of that it should be a good read.

Star Trek - New Visions Vol. 2

I just grabbed this because I've never covered a Star Trek comic before despite being a fan. What I got was a fumetti style book set in the Original Series universe by John Byrne. Apparently fumetti is Italian for comic book but has been co opted by the North Americans to describe a photonovel.  Photonovel's employ film negatives to do an adaptation of said movie or TV series and were popular in the late 70's and early 80's before VCR's made this sort of thing fairly redundant.  The twist on these Star Trek books is the film negatives are used to create original stories written by Byrne.  Interesting idea.

Marvel Pull List - Week of June 17th, 2015

Congrats Avengers - Time Runs Out Vol. 4 you're the Hardcover Highlight this week by default. I read that this is the final volume collecting Jonathan Hickman's "legendary", (I've never read it - I can't judge), run with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.  The Avengers Vs. The Illuminati sounds intriguing, less of an all-out smash-em-up and more of a character changing saga; it also bridges the Original Sin event, (I covered some of that here), with the current Secret Wars. Sounds like some good, solid canon building stuff  to me.

(apparently this is from a legit fitness book published by Marvel in the late 70's. stay tuned for more)

Fantastic Four Vol. 4: The End Is Fourever

I don't know how I feel about the swapping of "for" for "four", (ok, I do - I don't like it), but I've heard some internet spun rumors that Marvel is turning their backs on the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises.  I initially assumed that meant in a cinematic sense, (because very few people talk about Marvel's comics anymore, except the nerds who never stopped), but this title has me second guessing that.  First thing I'm noticing is - I don't understand how the issues numbering works.  I'm sure there's a reason to it, I'm just not sure what it is.  The first three volumes have issues one to fourteen and the annual of the fifth series which all sound fine.   Then we get to volume four and suddenly the issues have jumped up to six-hundred and forty some odd.  I didn't find out why the issues jumped up, but I did find out issue 645 is triple sized and indeed the last story featuring the First Family of Marvel.  I guess negotiations didn't go so well between Marvel and Fox hence the cancellation of the comic just before the new movie comes out.  Some are speculating the series won't be back until after the film has been released on DVD and even then it may take a while.  On the surface that seems petty but who knows what kind of crazy crap Fox was trying to pull.  Or maybe Marvel was the one being unreasonable.  We'll never really know.  But for all of the fans, (as few as they may be since sales of the book were down all ready), this is a sad moment.  Even though we all know it won't last forever, (dead is never dead in comics), it still means an FF-less existence for the next while.

DC Pull List - Week of June 10th, 2015

My Hardcover Highlight is Batgirl Vol. 1:  Batgirl of Burnside.  I got curious about this because according to my list the trade is being released at the same time as the hardcover.  That struck me as odd. The Big Blue sometimes publishes one trade, say Batman volume whatever, at the same time as they release the next volume in hardcover format, (see the Action Comics books under THE REST for another example that I should have just used in the first place).  I like that idea.  If you can't wait for the story you can just buy the next volume the same day.  I flipped through the pages of the webernet but I couldn't find any concrete reason why DC released both formats simultaneously except an attempt at increasing sales.  Or maybe it's to celebrate the renumbering of the volumes.  The book contains issues #35-40 but is numbered Volume 1 to coincide with Barbara Gordon "taking a new lease on life".  Basically she moves to a new city, new job, new friends etc.  Shaking the book up.  The reviews have been favorable from what I saw.

Nightwing Vol. 2: Rough Justice

I chose this basically for research purposes, (the same reason I chose the Batgirl hardcover). This book had shown up on Amazon.ca which I was very excited about because trying to collect the now out-of-print trades that these new reissues cover was beginning to look like a costly en devour but when I went to order it this past weekend for my B-Day it said it was unavailable. Which got me concerned.  Did it get pulled from production because Vol. 1 didn't sell well?  It's available for the Kindle through Amazon but not in physical book form.  Indigo/Chapters has it up for pre-order.  Flipped through the web to find out and no one is reporting a delay.  Here's hoping because I want this book!!

Wake

I'm all about the research tonight as I don't have a clue what this is, (it was either this or Bodies).  Last February DC published a volume 1 for this which collected issues #1-5.  Instead of a volume 2 we get this deluxe version that includes all 10 issues of the Scott Snyder created limited series.  It's printed under the DC owned Vertigo imprint.  The story is a sci-fi/horror blend by the sounds of it with a marine biologist being forced onto an underwater oil rig in the middle of the Arctic Circle.  Apparently Homeland Security, scientists and soldiers are all down there working on something big and luckily for the reader it all goes horribly wrong.

Indie Pull List - Week of June 10th, 2015

For no overwhelming reason I'm making Return of the Gremlins from Dark Horse my Hardcover Highlight this week. I've always wondered why the franchise hasn't been revived in this Golden Age of remakes, re imaginings and just plain rehashes.

And then I saw that.... Apparently I'm way off base.  And this is a re-issue of material from 7 years ago?  Ok, ok, was I totally crazy to assume that Dark Horse would be involved with the Stevey Spielberg produced/Joey Dante directed gem of the 80's?  I don't think I was.  And now I wonder if anybodies done that.... Doesn't look like it actually.  I wonder why?

Classic G.I. JOE Vol. 16

This is another series that's got the Classic label and is on the 16th volume.  At what point does something stop being classic?  The Deadpool volume that perplexed me was printing stories that were only 2 or 3 years old as "classic".  IDW has all ready done an 8 volume "best of", a 1 volume "omnibus and a 7 volume "complete collection".  What would the difference be?  The "classic" series was being printed the whole time these other collections were being offered up.  Why overlap so much?  The "classic" line DID start out publishing the old mid-80's books from Marvel but it's now catching up to more modern material from roughly 5 years ago.  So, I'll paraphrase a little and ask, at won't point does something START being classic?  Maybe the time it's published doesn't matter.  Being that this volume is written by one of the original authors of the Marvel books maybe "modern classic" would be valid...

ODY-C Vol. 1

This is called a "Psychedelic Sci-Fi" retelling of Homer's The Odyssey.  The main character is now a girl named Odyssia.  She's the captain, it sounds like, of a crew trying to find their way home after the end of a one hundred year galactic war.   I read some of Matt Fraction's run on Invincible Iron Man just after the first movie came out and he was a solid writer. The art might take some getting used to but this sounds interesting and at only $10 could be worth the risk.

Thanks to everyone who does read, it means a lot - here's a bonus image to get you all fired up, (or in today's case - the only image)!

Ok, whoa, whoa, whoa.  I can't continue until I learn more about this issue.  How does Aunt May and some punk from the neighborhood go up against  Galactus!?!?!  First off, this comic has not appreciated in value AT ALL.  Near Mint fetches a whopping $2.00.  One little fact that may have kept it from being a dollar for Mint is that it's written by Mike Carlin, (who went on to write for Iron Man, Avengers, Daredevil, Batman, JLA, Superman).  This story was concocted as a tribute to Hostess who were doing full page ads at the time.  The only cheap thing, (well, the whole story being an advertisement feels pretty cheap, too), is that it's all Spider-Man's dream but I guess that makes more sense then trying to actually explain how this would happen.  Anywho, Aunt May and Franklin actually have to keep Galactus alive by rounding up all of the Twinkies in the world and letting him eat them. Yes, I'll give you a second to read that again.  I don't know how much money Hostess was pumping to the Big Red in the 70's but it's crazy that this book actually came out.

Ant-Man - Scott Lang

Two Ant-Man trades this week as trailers for the movie begin tickling out.  While waiting to start Mad Max: Fury Road, (which is as good as the proverbial "they" say), I was surprised to hear Ant-Man referred to as Scott.  For some reason I just assumed they'd go with Hank Pym. Maybe I assumed that because I'm more familiar with Hank Pym.  I wasn't even sure if there was a second Ant-Man until that trailer last weekend.  This book is more of a hodge podge then a stand alone story but if you're like me and weren't even sure if there was another Ant-Man or you're just curious about what might be in store next month this book is the place to start.

Ms Marvel Vol. 3: Crushed

I've heard rumors that Angelina Jolie is asking around about directing a Ms. Marvel, (or was it Captain Marvel?), movie with Charlize Theron as the Marvel in question.  Is there any validity to that, does anyone know?  I'm going to go on record as saying I would watch that.  It could be a smart move by the misogynist Marvel to reverse some of those growing opinions, (all though when the head of Marvel Movies says he doesn't think a woman could support a whole movie it's a little hard to ignore).  Either way that's all speculation. This book isn't.  It's the third volume to the series I covered here when the second volume came out.

SRP: $19.99
Contains:  Ms. Marvel 12-15, Annual 1
CRD:  June 23rd, 2015

DC Pull LIst - Week of June 3rd, 2015

Hardcover Highlight this week might be a little controversial.  I'm going to pick Grayson: Agent of Spyral over the umpteenth re-issue of the Dark Knight Returns.  I feel like Grayson might be a guilty pleasure series but I'm curious all the same.

Green Arrow Vol. 3: The Trial Of Oliver Queen

I've been really enjoying the re-prints of Mike Grell's defining run on Green Arrow.  These books, I think, informed the tone of the CW show as they're very much a product of the gritty, down and dirty, post-Dark Knight 80's comic book landscape.  Those who don't enjoy the uber-serious 80's probably won't be converted by these books.  But for those who can enjoy that sort of thing these books should be all ready be in your collection.

SRP: $16.99
Contains: Green Arrow (1st series) #13-20
CRD: June 9th, 2015

Swamp Thing Vol. 6: The Sureen

I haven't actually read any of Charles Soule's run on Swamp Thing yet but if it's anything like Scott Snyder's run it should be quite good.  I like the idea of a cult, or sorts, that worship the Green.  Somehow they offer to turn Alec human again but he struggles with the decision because no one knows what will happen to the Green once he's gone.  I'm intrigued.

SRP: $16.99
Contains: Swamp Thing (5th series) #28-34
CRD: June 9th, 2015
