Marvel Pull List - Week of June 3rd, 2015

I started lining everything up for this week's Marvel post without a clue about what to write in this very space.  I was even considering throwing up the disclaimer and going with a quickie, (as cheap as that is), and then I noticed a $500 book in the list.  Wow!  Now I've got something to write about...after I research....

Ok, this is the way to become a Secret Wars expert.  This book contains 11 volumes that have both of the original Secret Wars and the Nick Fury lead Secret Wars event from the mid-2000's; all, (yes ALL), of the tie-ins for all three events and some alternate take material, (a Spider-Man centric look at the first Secret War), plus a poster by Alex Ross. Hands down, without a doubt, this gets the Hardcover Highlight of the week.  It's like an omnibus on steroids!!  The contents are as follows, and all in Premier Hardcover, (which is nicer than normal hardcover, I guess):

  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS: TO BATTLEWORLD AND BACK

  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS

  • THING: BATTLEWORLD

  • SECRET WARS II VOL. 1-4

  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS AFTERMATH

  • SECRET WARS

  • BEYOND THE SECRET WARS

  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS: BEHIND THE SCENES

  • POSTER - Alex Ross' version of the Secret Wars #1 cover

("Don't struggle, Hulk.  I just want to give you your wildest dreams.")

Venom By Rick Remender - The Complete Collection Vol. 1

The first of two planned volumes collecting Rick Remender's version of Venom.  It's Flash Thompson wearing the symbiote this time around and he appears to be working with the government, which doesn't necessarily mean he's always doing the right thing.  He's a soldier who's following orders...in a Venom suit.  This collection also includes a What If...? tale where Deadpool bonds with the symbiote.  I'm sure that will be ridiculous.

SRP: $34.99
Contains: Venom (2011) #1-12 and What If...? Venom Deadpool
CRD: June 23rd, 2015

Marvel Universe - Ant-Man Digest

This actually seems like it's aimed more at children, collecting a lot of issues from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and no doubt designed to get them excited for the upcoming feature film.  Marvel also released a hardcover prose novel featuring Ant-Man to try and get the more literary crowd interested in the new movie.  I'm sure this is just the beginning of books featuring Hank Pym that we'll see this summer.

SRP: $9.99
Contains: Marvel Adventures Super Heroes (1st Series) #6 and 10, Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes  #17, and material from AVENGERS: EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES #4 and SUPER HEROES #19

DC Pull List - Week of May 27th, 2015

I can't believe I forgot about the Indies!!  I even had the post half-started and I was going to finish it Saturday night but band practice ran long and then I was getting ready for the Anime Convention and then yesterday was said convention.  Ah, I'm such a failure!  I debated throwing the Indies up tonight and then doing DC tomorrow, but really there wasn't anything overly interesting going on in the Indie world.  I'm back on track now by throwing DC up and hopefully I can stay there.  All though, I'm supposed to be going to see Mad Max next Saturday....

Ok, ok, I'll put up the Indies first.  Geez, Rockatansky, don't need to point a sawed-off at me.

Batgirl Vol. 5: Deadline

The little that I have read of the New 52 Batgirl stories have been well written and entertaining. The only thing I will say, which most people agree on, is they shouldn't have "cured" Barbara. I know, I know, she's been stuck in that chair for 20 years or whatever it is now, but she was an awesome symbol and role model for handicapped people of all ages and creeds.  I get why they did it and it is hard to keep things fresh for a character when nothing changes.  I just felt like that was something they should have left the same.  She was a positive message.  Now she's just another superhero, even if she is a well written one.  While I'm sort of on the topic, it also bothered me when DC wouldn't let the writers show Batwoman get married.  Why the hell not?!  Last time I looked at a calendar it was 2015 and gay marriage is now a part of our landscape.  I love DC but they sometimes have some unrepentantly old school ways of thinking about things.

SRP: $17.99
Contains:  Batgirl (4th Series) #27-34, ANNUAL #2 and Batgirl: Futures End
CRD: June 2nd, 2015

Batman Adventures Vol. 2

The notable thing about this book is it collects the very first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn.  These aren't new stories like I thought.  They're reprints of a mid-90's series called, you guessed it, Batman Adventures.  These must have been going on around the time that Batman: The Animated Series was dominating the airwaves as the art style is very close to that. Probably nothing in here that would be cannon, per se, but it might still be worth a look - even just for Harley's comic book debut.

SRP: $19.99
Contains: Batman Adventures (1st series) #11-20
CRD: June 2nd, 2015

DOUBLE PULLS: DC - May 20th, 2015; Marvel - May 27th, 2015

So, I'm doing my first Double List because I was sick the previous weekend but wanted to make sure Monday's DC list went up. I'm trying to not make a habit of being late/skipping lists but I'm finding it very difficult, so I do apologize for that.

********************************************************************

Half and half for the Big Blue this week.  Couple of Superhero books and a couple of alternative titles.

JLA Vol. 7

Continuing the reprint of the complete run of the mid 90's, (well, it crossed decades, but it started in the 90's) version of the JLA rebooted by Grant Morrison.  The current collection continues Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke's turn at the helm.  A lot of the original, smaller trades for this series are out of print and kind of expensive, (I noticed one of them selling for $75 through an eBay type deal).  I'm going to be snatching these up while they're available.

SRP: $24.99
Contains: JLA #77-93
CRD:  May 26th, 2015

The Unwritten Vol. 11 Apocalypse

This is the last volume that reprints the series by Mike Carey under the Vertigo banner.  I didn't know any of that when I randomly selected this title out of curiosity.  Sounds like some good fantasy.  Lot's of other author's with quotes on the book about how smart it is, how they wish they'd thought of it, how fun and addictive it is et cetera, et cetera.

SRP: $16.99
Contains: Unwritten: Apocalypse #7-12
CRD:  May 26th, 2015

Batman Detective Comics Vol. 5: Gothopia
Batman Detective Comics Volume 6 Icarus (HC)

Lots of trades from the Raging Red this week.

Thanos Vs Hulk

I almost published the new post without writing anything about this book!  It's Jim Starlin so I know the cosmic stuff will be handled well, (he did some of those kinds of books for DC and I enjoyed them).  This mini series was from last year so I'm not sure if anything in here will tie in to the upcoming Infinity Gauntlet movie or if it's a mostly unrelated story that just happens to star an Avenger.  There's an issue of Warlock from the mid-70's included after the mini-series so I can only assume it ties in somehow.

SRP: $16.99
Contains: Thanos vs. Hulk  #1-4 and Warlock (1st Series) #12
CRD: June 9th, 2015

Deadpool Classic Vol. 11: Merc With A Mouth

I'm not really surprised that Deadpool has trades coming out with the "Classic" sub-heading, (he's what?  25 years old now?), I'm more surprised that there's enough 'classic' material to fill 11 volumes. And considering this one is reprinting stuff that's only 5 or 6 years old it does seem that everything Deadpool has ever done is classic.

SRP: $34.99
Contains:  Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #1-13 and Lady Deadpool

Indie Pull List - Week of May 20th, 2015

Look at IDW getting all hardcover, deluxe-ish, limited edition-y crazy.  It's a good thing they did because the Hardcover Highlight is the Maxx - Maxximized (Deluxe Edition).  I read some of the old Maxx comics, but most of my Maxx memories come from watching the animated series on late night re runs.  This hardcover collects the first four issues of the re released, original issues that have been "Maxximized" with the whole process being overseen by Sam Keith.   It does carry a hefty price tag, though - $125.00. Apparently that comes with a bonus piece of artwork by Keith and a limited run of 175.  Even with all that it's still a little high on the ouch factor, especially with the meat of the book being only 104 pages.  I'm sure it's a very nice book but I don't know if nostalgia is worth that much.  You can also get these issues in a more reasonable, (but still a little higher) priced hardcover for $21.99  And I was so pumped when I started this Hardcover Highlight...

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed Vol. 1

I'm actually surprised this didn't come out 20 years ago when the movie first came out.  It's been a cult classic for a while so at the very least I'm surprised it didn't come out 5 or 10 years ago.  But, regardless, it's here now.  The Midian is such a ripe creation that any number of stories could be told within it and feature any number of characters and it's all justified. You also don't need to have seen the original movie to understand the core concept.  This is a great idea for a series, hopefully it IS great.

Publisher: Boom! Studios
SRP: 14.99
Contains: Nightbreed #1-4
CRD: May 26th, 2015

Alice In The Country Of Clover - Twin Lovers

Oh, ok, this is a manga.  Not that there's anything wrong with that and I don't know why I thought it wouldn't be.  Anyway.  It's popular.  New York Times Bestseller list popular.  And my buddy just said he thinks it's been turned into an anime.  The Twin Lovers in the title are Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum who have lost some wait and gotten considerable plastic surgery, (they're featured on the cover).  Apparently there's also a game and light novels that are part of this whole, I guess, franchise, you'd call it.

Publisher: Seven Seas Entertainment
SRP: $13.99
Contains: 192 pages of Twin Lover action

Marvel Pull List - Week of May 20th, 2015

No Hardcover Highlight this week as there's no hardcover release from Marvel.  Wonder if there's a specific reason or it's just a coincidence.  Probably a coincidence.  Oh well we'll just continue on to the:!!!DISCLAIMER!!!

Secret Warriors - The Complete Collection Vol. 1

I know nothing about this but am always enticed by Complete, Omnibus, Absolute, Epic collections.  Seems like Nick Fury has moved on from S.H.E.I.L.D. and now he's training the offspring of other Marvel heroes.  I'm sure it's way more gritty than it sounds judging by the cover art and it's pretty easy to imagine a grizzled Nick Fury taking on a surogate father or wise Uncle role so I'm sure there'll be some good stuff going on here.

SRP: $34.99
Contains:  Secret Warriors #1-16, Dark Reign: The List - Secret Warriors and material from Dark Reign: New Nation

Civil War - Ms. Marvel

With the Civil War movie coming out next year, (I think), I wonder if the Big Red is hinting at a new silver screen appearance debuting during said movie?  And with the rumblings in regards to the somewhat misogynist attitude Marvel Studios seems to have, adding another female or two to the Cinematic Universe couldn't hurt.  Doing my research I found out this volume was originally published under the name Ms. Marvel By Brian Reed Vol. 2 so if you all ready have that book, don't bother.  Reprinting it under another title does help the idea that she may be in the final Civil War movie.

DC Pull List - Week of May 13th, 2015

Just got back from the local comic book store with a bag full of leftover Free Comic Book Day goodies and was thinking how lucky I was to live in a town that still has a Comic Book store. I'm going to throw up a link for their Facebook page just in case anybody lives in the area and wants to check them out.  They have a good atmosphere, and while their not huge, the friendly faces more then make up for the lack of space.

Hardcover Highlight was a toss up between the Green Lantern book and the Fables Deluxe.  I went with Fables in the end because I'm all ready cover Green Lantern in the trades and wanted to keep things fresh.

Forever Evil

This collects the 7 issue New 52 mini-series, if that makes you cringe then read no further.  Like most DC mini and maxi events the whole story is told not only in the main book, but also in a series of tie-ins, spin-offs and companions.  I like the epic nature of the DC events but they can sometimes get a little...unfriendly, I guess, for lack of a better term.  Sometimes if you haven't read all, or at least some, of the companion books the main series can feel like there's holes in it. That being said, if you do get the whole picture, their events are fantastic, so, I'm looking forward to this.  The idea that the Crime Syndicate murders the Justice League and takes over sounds like it will probably get explained away at some point but it should still be entertaining while it's happening.  Oh, it's also written by Geoff Johns, which is always a good thing in my books.

SRP: $19.99
Contains: Forever Evil #1-7

Green Lantern Vol. 5: Test Of Wills

Not much to say about this one - it's New 52 Green Lantern goodness. I've read the first 12 or 13 issues and quite enjoyed them. GL is one of the few books that doesn't feel like it changed much after the events of Flashpoint gave us the New 52. There's always been a lot going on in the GL books and lots of characters to follow so it's nice that it stayed familiar.  So, ya....go get on reading some Green Lantern, I guess.  Or something.

Indie Pull List - Week of May 13th, 2015

Hey, it's Mother's Day.  Really don't have any more to elaborate on that with.  Love you, Mom and all that jazz.

Looks like the Ninja Turtles book and the Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt book may have been delayed because they showed up in the list again for this week, (along with some I didn't cover, like the Mass Effect - Library Edition and Flood: A Novel In Pictures).  I deleted them out of this weeks list but refer you to last weeks post where they were covered, if you're interested. Quick scan of the Indie list this week and I'd have to say my Hardcover Highlight is Neil Gaiman's Lady Justice basically just because it's Neil Gaiman.  He's a clever and creative writer - even a lesser effort is still better then some other authors "masterpieces", (not too insinuate this would be a lesser effort, also, since we're in the brackets now anyway, this was apparently published last week in trade format and isn't solely written by Neil Gaiman, more like it was created by).

Aliens - Fire And Stone

This is the Aliens part of the Prometheus/Aliens/Predator/AVP cross over event. When the mythology has gotten as dense as the Alien and Predator series new entries to the cannon feel like new episodes from the Twilight Zone or Star Trek - some stories work and some don't and when they do you celebrate and when they don't you shrug and move on.  I can't really get a sense of how the various Fire And Stone volumes are going to tie together just by reading the individual write-ups, (which all sound like separate stories - so, maybe you don't need to read all of the parts to still get a satisfying story?), so I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.  For those of us who don't like waiting between trades the Complete Fire And Stone will be released in November in a hardcover edition.  I'll probably wait until the whole thing gets released since I'm pretty impatient when waiting for the bigger picture.

Ghetto Brother - Warrior To Peacemaker

Set in the late '60's in the Bronx this graphic novel tells the true story of the Ghetto Brothers, an interracial gang that used their numbers to affect positive change and broker a truce between the gangs that were ripping apart the neighborhood.  As a way to keep the truce and turn the misplaced energy of the youth towards something better they started hosting weekly concerts in old factories, abandoned buildings - wherever they could find and in doing so helped craft an early form of hip-hop.  This sounds like textbook anathema, (and in that I mean, the direct opposite of a textbook), much more alive and personal then a clinical overview could give you.  I'm not familiar with the creators or the publisher but I'm going to keep an eye out for this.

Marvel Pull List - Week of May 13th, 2015

Please don't be a huge list, please don't be a huge list, I've got band practice in a couple hours so work with me here Marvel.  My first name is Stan's last name, for crying out loud!  That's gotta get me something, right?

That's what I thought.  Speaking of cutting people some slack, what's up with all these hate Tweets Joss Whedon was getting?  Why, out of all the filmmaker's that could receive death threats for the product they release, would anybody think Joss Whedon should be the recipient of that kind of treatment?  There was nothing controversial in that movie and the fact that people say there is proves just how far off from good we all are.  Defining things and labeling them ad nasuem is ridiculous especially in our art, our entertainment. There's REAL problems in the world and many, many politicians who are far more deserving of our death threats and our energies.  Mr. Whedon delivered a great sequel and a good, solid movie.  He juggled those balls and even managed to make us care, legitimately, about a few of them.  It's hard to go in to it more without spoiler alerts and I think a lot of the pressure came from an outside group, (ie NOT comic book fans), but James Gunn said it best so I'll let him say it last: "Most of you are aware of this, but anyone who urges a filmmaker to kill himself over a movie plot point needs to seriously examine his life."

Quickly now, (somehow, in trying to do this quickly, I've gotten myself all worked up and written a rant), my Hardcover Highlight is definitely Thor Vol. 1: Goddess of Thunder.  I might actually pick up my first Marvel book in a while out of sheer curiosity.

Savage Hulk Vol. 2: Down To The Crossroads

This book and the Thor hardcover I just mentioned, (and a few other's lately) have a sub-heading of Marvel NOW.  I wonder if that's similar to DC's New 52 idea?  Take all the heroes and update/modernize/reinvent - whatever you want to call it. This Hulk book says he's trapped between dimensions without Bruce Banner's influence....so, BB isn't the Hulk?  Is the Hulk now a separate entity, kind of like Frankenstein's monster?  It definitely doesn't support my New 52 theory, as this takes place back in time while Hulk fights Frankenstein, judging by the cover Dr. Strange, and a host of other "hoary-creatures", (as the write up reads).  This does not sound like an entry point AT ALL.

Contains: Savage Hulk #5-6, Monster Size Hulk and Hulk: Let Battle Begin

Bucky Barnes - The Winter Soldier Vol. 1: The Man On The Wall

Finally!  A decent cover image!  Between the rant and the less-than-stellar pics I've been nabbing, this week was feeling like a bit of a slop show for the Marvel Pull List.  Who knows?  Maybe it still is. Anyways, I was always interested in Bucky Barnes.  He's one of the few sidekicks that doesn't really share the power set of the hero he's apprenticing with.  I guess eventually he does share the power but becomes a lot more...intense, let's say, then his former colleague.  This book spins out of the events of Original Sin, which I covered here.

DC Pull List - Week of May 6th, 2015

I was going to talk about how good a sequel Age of Ultron was but that seems a little inappropriate with the blue and white star above us.  Maybe I'll save that.  Maybe I'll move on entirely by then.  Who knows?  My hardcover highlight this week is a type of book I don't usually show a lot of interest in - the art books.  I have no problem with them, per se - I just don't feel like shelling out the money for them.  The main reason I'm excited about this book is that I'm also excited for the new movie.  I'm talking about the Mad Max: Fury Road book where 65 top artists in the industry draw double page spreads all based on images from George Miller's post-apocalyptic desolation nightmare.  Any lover of fine, irradiated landscapes should take note.

Superman Vs Darkseid

I don't know what I thought this would be, but I should have known it would just be a random collection of stories that don't have any overall arc to them. My Comic Shop could barely even muster a full sentence to describe it: "The Man Of Steel battle the dark lord of Apokolips". You don't say! I could NOT have figured that out from the title or the splashy cover by Adam Kubert. I guess it's not entirely their fault - there really isn't much else to say. I'm surprised I've managed to ramble on this long about it. This is a book for the uninitiated, (which is nothing to be ashamed of), not for the continuity geeks.

SRP: $19.99
Contains:  Superman (2nd Series) #3, Adventures of Superman #426, Action Comics #586, Superman vs. Darkseid: Apokolips Now! Superman/Batman #12-13, Countdown (to Final Crisis) #3-2, Death of the New Gods #8 and Justice League (2011) #23.1

Smallville - Season 11 Vol. 6: Alien

I don't know if we need this.  Smallville was interesting at the time but, in the current landscape of silver screen heroics, has started feeling a little too quaint to be of any interest anymore. Apparently I was one of the few who breathed a sigh or relief when it finally ended because the Season 11 series is on it's sixth volume now.  I'm just not sure what else they could have done with this without full on borrowing from the all ready established mythos and if they're doing that then the whole thing really makes no sense.  The write-up and some covers I saw name drop Gotham City, Martian Manhunter, Constantine, Tess Mercer, the Monitor, Zatanna, Jay Garrick and the list goes on.  How much room could there be left for Tom Welling?

SRP: $16.99
Contains: Smallville - Season 11: Special #3 and Smallville - Season 11: Alien #1-4.
